SQ Consult was asked by the Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE) of the European Parliament to develop an analytical study on "Energy storage: Which market designs and regulatory incentives are needed?".
The results were input for the EU energy policy debate, especially in relation to the Energy Union package. The objective of the study was to describe and analyse how different market designs and regulatory incentives can help or hinder the development of new energy storage technologies in the gas and electricity sectors. This study included:
• Description of the different kinds of energy storage currently available in EU, their capacities, technology matureness, the way they are functioning, state of play of research and limitations;
• Analysis of relevancy of energy storage to the Energy Union package. Contribution to smart grids, EU targets on renewable energies (PV, wind and hydro power), electro-mobility and competitiveness of energy prices;
• Benchmark of incentives and supporting energy policies in different Member States;
• Elaboration of policy recommendations on existing energy policies and on new needed policies.
